How to Earn Your Degree in Public Administration While Being a Full-Time Mom

12-12-2017 06:40 AM

It can be difficult to attend school with small children, though it is not impossible. If you have dreams of working in the field of public administration but you do not have the necessary degree, there are ways to earn this degree while being a full-time mom. From pacing yourself to taking advantage of online programs, here are some tips for earning that degree as a full-time mom.

Online Flexibility

There is an advantage to taking online classes when you are juggling several different things at once. An online public administration degree will open the same doors for you as one gained on campus. Programs like the online MPA program at Norwich University are designed to be completed at the pace that you need to take. Because they have many people who are working full-time, attendance of classes is flexible. The classes are also smaller, to help foster a safe and more personal learning environment.  Many people believe that online classes and degree programs help you to develop better communication skills, while also offering the chance to have a deeper conversation. The nature of the online class discussion format gives everyone the chance to talk in some way.

Don’t Overdo It

While you may be tempted to take as many classes as possible so that you can graduate as quickly as possible, it is important to not do that. Schools that offer an online public administration degree will give you time to work at your own pace. Since you don’t want to overdo it and burn out quickly, make sure that you have enough time in your schedule to do all the work that each class requires you to do.  Some people recommend starting out as a part-time student, especially when you are just starting to balance school and being a full-time mom. Then, if you feel like you can cope, gradually add more classes to your schedule until you have completed your degree.

Find Support

It is important to find a support system when you are going back to school. If your schedule might disrupt things like picking your children up from school or driving them to soccer practice, reach out to your friends and family to get some help. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to do everything on your own. Reach out to your classmates and see if anyone else is taking a similar path. Another way to find support is to involve your kids. If they are in school, you can work on homework together. This can be a real bonding experience, as well as help you study and spend time with the people who matter most.

Being a mom is a full-time job and going to school can take over your life as well. By taking advantage of online programs, knowing your limits, and finding a support system to help you balance life and school, you can successfully do the thing that you love.
