I recently came across an insightful animated video that raised a critical question about our evolving workplaces. In the video, a manager tells an employee to use AI to speed up their workflow. A traditional 1-hour task is successfully compressed into just 10 minutes.

However, instead of the employee gaining free time or breathing room, the remaining time is instantly filled with more tasks, then another, and another.

While AI undeniably makes businesses faster and more efficient, it seems to have accelerated the pace of work to an unsustainable degree.

If every 1-hour block is condensed to 10 minutes only to be refilled, employees risk losing their work-life balance entirely.

How do we establish healthy boundaries in an AI-driven workplace?

That is a concern being shared by many employees on the receiving end. Given AI is not doing tasks completely accurately, it is also taking a toll to actually verify the outcome of AI before moving on to the next step. So while the employer may think the task was done in 10 minutes, it is actually taking longer to use the output.

I think this tug of war will continue for a while until AI becomes more reliable. Once that happens, employees will just have to prioritize high level views without going into granularities, and apply critical thinking skills to use the output.

However, it is true that the pace of work has been permanently changed, similar to what would have happened when computers and applications like Excel became common at workplaces. It takes time to find the right balance, no one has the answer right now I think.
