    As more and more climate change standards are being introduced around the globe (the SEC released proposed rules in March), there  is an increasing need for a dedicated role in the organization to support this. There are new roles like Sustainability or ESG Controller popping up on job boards. I'm keen to hear how organizations are responding to this growing need.

    The role of a sustainability controller is essential in today's organizations, especially with the increasing demands for sustainability disclosure. Finance and accounting professionals are uniquely equipped with the skills and experience needed to excel in this new and critical role.

    I tend to agree that these roles are growing in importance for organizations to keep up with the developments - and hence the fact that the ask for it is growing supports that. And even if the position doesn't carry the name of 'ESG/Sustainability Controller', it often still is part of the job description.

    A dedicated lead in the finance team to head these developments is in my opinion essential, because it does require a specific set of knowledge. It doesn't mean though that the others are exempted of dealing with these developments as they are more and more an integrated part of doing business. As Stella already pointed out before, the finance funcion is uniquely equipped to deal with a.o. data quality challenges these developments bring to, and as they're usually already connecting the silo's it would be a great position to consider having, especially in larger organizations currently dealing with many sets of regulations

    These roles are certainly evolving.  The requisite skill set to fill these roles is gaining the attention of the academic community, as they strive to educate students for these emerging roles. To this end, there were numerous sessions at the annual meeting of the American Accounting Association in August 2024. I encourage those looking to define and possibly fill these positions to connect with with accounting professors to help them understand your needs.

    Many organizations are establishing sustainability roles or functions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. These newly created positions not only address sustainability goals but also help offset the jobs impacted by AI, offering new opportunities for workforce development.
