    Good morning community!
I am from Spain and got my bachellors and masters over there, now I am working in the US as a senior accountant (I passed CMA part 1 so on my way to become a CMA). The only "gap" I have is that I have no tax experience and obvs no education about it since I didn't study in the US (I am familiar with European VAT). I need to have a better understanding of sales and use tax for my current job - they asked me to find an online course and they'll pay for it.

I've been trying to look online but the ones I have found do not cover what I need (basically how to file sales and use tax for a US company, and where the sales tax is paid in cases when the company sells from a state and delivers to another).

Does anybody know if IMA has any course that covers this, or any other provider? Thank you in advance!

    Hi, Maria!

I don't know if IMA has a course, but each state in the US has its own rules that detail what is and what isn't taxable within the given state and whether the sale or purchase of products and services are subject to the state's sales tax or its use tax.  The latter depends on whether a company has nexus within that state. Most state's Department of Revenues have informational booklets on their websites regarding their general guidelines and links to their code and I have found that many states offer free courses on sales and use taxes within their respective states.  Any course that you find that has a fee will generally not be state specific, but national CPA firms may have them available and there are several CPE companies out their that also have general overview courses.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Maria,

Is there a specific state/county/city that you need to learn about?  Many municipalities have classes that you can attend.  I just took a webinar from the City of Westminster.  It was a basic webinar for beginners & it was free from the City.

    All the Best,
    Karen

    Good morning Maria,

You can go to a local college or university and look up their offering for sales tax classes, online or in person.

That being said, filing sales taxes with different states is rather straightforward. If you have any questions that are not covered on their websites, there's always a contact you can reach out to (phone or email).

Don't hesitate to reach out to the tax authorities directly.

    Sincerely,

    Farah

    Hi Karen,

Our company files in different states and it just started doing ecommerce and there's more physical stores to come in other states soon - so it's more related with Nexus and more in general in the US - but will keep an eye in each municipality / state website and see if I can find something useful.

    Thank you!
