In theory, if your membership lapses, you cannot use the CMA designation after your name as you need to be an active member.

In reality, not much happens. Just pay your dues and move on.

There is a 90 grace period - but following that, you are dropped. Of course, payment after that will still be accepted and you will be restored to your membership.
