    Hi All,

I am an active CMA with 11 years experience in hospitality accounting. I have been mulling over setting up a side project doing forensic audits for restaurants who believe either their management company or their bookkeeper is misappropriating funds/mismanaging their books. I am wondering if I need any specific designation to do a forensic audit that would hold up in court. I would hate to provide my findings only to have it thrown out because I am not qualified. Any one here currently in the forensic accounting space?

I bet US CPA is a good track. Since you have years of experience in management accounting. My friend is working with forensic accounting with CPA. I hope this can help.

    Hi Andrew,

What I know is to become a Forensic Accountant you need to clear the CFE certification. The reason being, there might be certain laws and do's and don'ts that you must need to follow so that the evidence that is collected is valid in the court of law. Besides, I am assuming that the CFE certification will have some Ethics and rules that you need to follow. Better to be safe then sorry. Just a thought.

I'm sure in CFE there would be set of questions that needs to be asked to hold a person against. Again, only a certified CFE would have this knowledge. This is what I believe. Unless, someone who's done CMA and is practicing or has practiced Forensic Accounting can throw in some light.

Or you can join in the CFE group on LinkedIn and ask this question, may be they would answer well.
