Note:  This post intentionally avoids operational instructions that could enable fraud.  The goal is to help organizations recognize risk and implement defenses, not to teach people how to commit fraud.

🚨 AI is changing the fraud game - especially with expense reports.

What used to take Photoshop skills and hours of effort can now be done in seconds - by anyone.

Here's how AI is powering a new wave of expense fraud:

    🧾 Ultra-realistic fake receipts
🛠️ AI-edited images with no visible tampering
✍️ Business-sounding justifications written by ChatGPT
🔁 Mass automation of "unique" fake claims
🧠 Attempts to outsmart fraud-detection systems using AI itself

The scary part? These fakes are often better than what a real person submits.

    💡 What can companies do?

    • Use AI to fight AI: anomaly detection, semantic analysis, and vendor verification

    • Combine human + machine review

    • Move away from images - verify source data when possible

    • Update policies to account for AI-generated risk

The fraud landscape has changed. Is your expense policy and review process keeping up?  Here's an AI Expense Fraud Red Flag Checklist tool to use when reviewing your company's expense report submissions.
